2FF, 3FF, 4FF, MFF2 o iSIM: Factor de Forma

Extraible = microabrasion. MFF2 = 10 anos. iSIM = atado al SoC.

2FF (25x15mm) Extraible — M2M legacy. 3FF (15x12mm) Extraible — IoT portatil. 4FF (12.3x8.8mm) Extraible — IoT consumo. MFF2 (6x5mm) Soldado — industrial, automotriz. iSIM (0mm²) Integrado — sensores NB-IoT, wearables.

Preguntas frecuentes

MFF2 or iSIM — which should I spec for a new NB-IoT sensor design?

iSIM if your target SoC (Nordic nRF9160, Qualcomm X35, Sony Altair) supports it and your target carriers offer iSIM profiles on that SoC. Power drops ~70% vs discrete eSIM, BOM is cheaper, PCB space is freed. MFF2 if you need carrier flexibility beyond the SoC vendor's certification scope, or if your volumes do not justify the SoC-specific iSIM integration effort.

Does a removable 4FF SIM work in a high-vibration industrial environment?

It will fail — the question is when, not if. Contact micro-abrasion from vibration creates intermittent open circuits. The failure starts as occasional "SIM not detected" errors and progresses to permanent failure. Industrial-grade removable SIMs extend the timeline but do not eliminate the failure mode. For high-vibration: MFF2 soldered.

What does "industrial-grade SIM" actually mean?

Temperature range of -40°C to +105°C, up to 2 million write/erase cycles, 10-17 year lifespan, and voltage tolerance of 1.62-5.5V. Consumer SIMs are typically -25°C to +85°C, 100k cycles, 2-3 year lifespan. The "industrial" spec applies to the silicon and packaging — independent of form factor. Always specify the grade separately from the form factor.
